Install on Windows

Three things: run the installer, get WeChat ready, add an API key. Then it starts with a dry run and sends nothing.

Updated

Before you start

  • A Windows 10 / 11 PC (x64 or ARM), ideally one set aside for it.
  • WeChat for desktop 4.1.x, logged in, in Simplified Chinese or English.
  • An API key from a model provider: how to get one.
  • Optional: Chrome and your other WeChat account, for mail alerts.

Installing

  1. DownloadGet the installer from the download page.
  2. Run itDouble-click the installer. It installs for your account only and needs no administrator rights. If Windows says it protected your PC, click More info, then Run anyway.
  3. Open itMeow lives in the notification area at the bottom right (perhaps under ^). The first time, the setup opens.

Setup

Steps on the left, one at a time on the right; the language switch sits at the top of every step (Chinese by default). To open the setup again later, click the Meow icon in the notification area, then ⋯ → Set Up….

1. WeChat

WeChat open, logged in, in Simplified Chinese or English. Allowing it to read WeChat’s downloaded files is recommended, so it can read files people send you.

2. Assistant: pick a model, add the key

Choose the provider (DeepSeek by default), paste the key, click Save, then Test. The key is stored encrypted on this PC and goes only to that provider. Step by step

3. You

Add your name; replies refer to you by it. To give instructions from your phone, later turn on Answer me in File Transfer in Settings → You and talk to it there.

To use your other WeChat account for mail alerts and instructions: send this account a message from it, open that chat in WeChat on this PC, click This Chat Is Me, then Yes, That’s Me. Stop Meow first.

4. Mail (optional)

Mail alerts need the Chrome extension; you can set them up later. Setting up mail alerts

5. License (optional)

Activate your key here if you have one; without it, it runs as a dry run. Activating a key

Start

Click Start (Dry Run). It reads your messages and works out replies, but sends nothing; Recent in the menu lists the chats it would have answered. When you’re happy, buy a license, activate it, and switch Dry run to Sending at the bottom of the menu.

Keeping it running

  • Settings → General → Launch at login.
  • In Windows Settings, set screen and sleep to Never so the PC doesn’t lock or sleep. Best only on a PC set aside for it.
  • A WeChat account can be logged in on one computer at a time; logging in elsewhere signs this one out.

Updating

When a new version is out, the menu says so. Click Update and it downloads, installs and reopens, with your settings, keys and license kept.

Uninstalling

  1. In Settings → License, click Deactivate This PC to free its slot (or do it later on the license page).
  2. Choose ⋯ → Quit Meow in the menu, then uninstall it in Windows Settings → Apps.
  3. To remove everything, also delete %APPDATA%\Meow, %LOCALAPPDATA%\Meow\Logs and your files folder %USERPROFILE%\Meow.
